As I’ve gotten older, one thing I didn’t expect to change so much… was my lashes.

They’ve become straighter, harder to curl, and don’t hold lift the way they used to. On top of that, applying eyeliner has gotten trickier with slightly hooded lids—so I’ve had to find other ways to create that lifted, defined eye look.

After a lot of trial and error, I’ve finally created a lash routine that gives me lifted, pretty lashes—whether I’m going for a natural everyday look or something more glam.

If your lashes don’t cooperate like they used to, this routine might help you too.

The Lash Struggles No One Talks About

If you’re in your late 30s or 40s, you might notice:

• Lashes that won’t hold a curl

• Less fullness or density

• Mascara smudging more easily

• Eyeliner becoming harder to apply

I’ve dealt with all of this—which is why I rely on a mix of tools, mascaras, and lashes to get the look I want.

My Full Lash Routine (Step-by-Step)

1. Lash Curler (My Non-Negotiable First Step)

This is the foundation of everything. The curler I’ve been using is by Shiseido

Revlon lash curler (budget option)

Because my lashes are naturally straight, I always start with a lash curler to create lift. Without this step, nothing else really works the same.

Tip: I gently pulse the curler instead of clamping too hard—it helps create a more natural lift.

2. My Top Lash Mascara Combo (Lift + Hold)

Bottom Lash Mascara (Don’t Skip This)

I use two mascaras on my top lashes:

• One for length and lift Prosa Micro Fiber Mascara

• One for volume and hold Estée Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Lash Volume Mascara

This layering technique helps lock in the curl from the lash curler—especially important if your lashes tend to fall flat throughout the day.

I always use a separate mascara for my bottom lashes. Loreal Extensionist

Why? Because it gives a softer, more precise look and helps avoid smudging under the eyes.

It might seem like a small step, but it makes your whole eye look more polished.

This is one of the biggest game changers in my routine.

4. My Everyday False Lashes (Drugstore Finds)

For everyday wear, I love affordable lashes I can grab from CVS.

• Lightweight

• Natural-looking

• Easy to apply

These are perfect when I want a little extra fullness without looking overly done.

I keep a few packs on hand because I go through them often. They are natural looking and very affordable.

All these styles are from the brand kiss in styles PompadourPixie-and 11

5. My Glam Lashes (Sephora Favorite)

For a more glam look, I use a pair from Sephora that I absolutely love Lilly Lashes in the style Money Maker. They are self adhesive. Typically I do use some clear lash glue but only the 2nd and 3rd time I wear them for an extra grip.

They’re a bit more expensive (around $16), but they:

• Add fullness and drama

• Create an eyeliner effect (which I LOVE)

• Save me time since eyeliner can be tricky on mature lids

These are my go-to for nights out or when I want that extra polished look.

6. Clear Lash Glue with Vitamins

I prefer using a clear lash glue from Duo that also has nourishing ingredients.

It feels a little gentler on my lash line and blends seamlessly—especially for daytime looks.

7. Lash Serum (For Long-Term Results)

This is more of a long-term step, but I use a lash serum by Grande Cosmetics to help support growth and thickness.

It’s not instant—but over time, it definitely helps improve the overall look of my natural lashes.

If You Struggle With…

Here’s what I recommend based on your lash type:

Lashes won’t hold a curl: Focus on a strong lash curler + layering mascaras

Hooded or mature lids: Try lashes that create an eyeliner effect

Sparse lashes: Add a lash serum into your routine

Want a natural look: Stick to lightweight, everyday lashes

Final Thoughts

Yes… it might seem like a lot of steps.

But once you find what works for you, it becomes second nature—and honestly, it makes such a difference in how your eyes look and feel.

This routine has helped me create lifted, fuller-looking lashes without needing extensions—and it’s something I can easily adjust depending on how natural or glam I want to go.
